Milk is a very common household object. It is everywhere. In milkshakes, cheese, yoghurt, sour cream, whipped cream, butter, custard, ice cream, chocolate, even hotdogs can contain milk! But what you might not have realised is the animal cruelty behind the white liquid.
Problem 1: Taking the milk in the first place!
Cows produce milk for their calves, in order to feed them. Farmers take milk from cows that is intended for the cow's poor babies! This leads us to...
Problem 2: The Separation
When a baby calf is born, farmers immediately take them away from their mothers, usually within the first few minutes of them being born! This is very distressing for both the calf and the mother. What's worse is that most of the baby cows are sent off to the slaughterhouse just after being born! Imagine if you were born and you were immediately sent to be slaughtered! You wouldn't like it, and neither would your mum, so why should animals with as much rights as you have to suffer that?
Problem 3: Breeding
Modern cows are bred to produce lots and lots of milk. It is unnatural and bad for their health to have to produce such high levels of milk.
Problem 4: Factory Farming
The dairy industry is working towards factory farming. This is a very bad idea as it causes a whole lot more cruelty towards cows. The current Dairy Code of Welfare allows innocent cows to be put into cages permanently!
Problem 5: Truth or Lie?
The dairy industry has tried to convince people that milk is necessary for our health. This is not 100% true as there are many healthy, delicious alternatives to milk. It is good to be aware that there are also health concerns related to the consumption of dairy products. The fact NZs rely on milk so much is becoming a problem.
What can YOU do?
Cut down on the milk you eat and drink. Before you buy a carton of milk from the supermarket, check the shelves. Is there any rice or almond milk? These are great alternatives to dairy products. There are plenty of milk-free recipes on the Internet. In fact, here is a link to a recipe for vegan pancakes: http://www.geniuskitchen.com/recipe/milk-free-egg-free-pancakes-92647
