No Such Thing as Free Range Eggs

Did you know that there is no legal definition of 'free range' in New Zealand? This means that absolutely anyone can say that their eggs are free range, even if their hens are suffering in cages. This is not OK, and as you may know, we are working on a petition to stop this cruelty.

Cage egg hens are each given the equivalent of an A4 piece of paper to live in. One single shed might contain 45,000 helpless hens. Temperature and climate are altered so the hens produce lots and lots of eggs at an unnatural rate. Cages are wired and have small gaps to allow hens to feed on whatever chemicals they are being fed.

Here are some ways to help:

- Donate to SAFE for Animals. They are a wonderful organisation that are constantly helping animals like battery hens. Visit

to donate. Go to safe.org.nz to donate.

- Rehome a battery hen. Once they have stopped laying hundreds of eggs at a high rate, hens are sent to be slaughtered. Save a hen and rehome it! You will get one or two free eggs every day as a reward for your kindness, so why not? Find out more at https://poultrykeeper.com/rehoming-battery-hens/rehoming-ex-battery-hens-faq/

- Look for the blue SPCA tick. The SPCA really know what they are doing. Making sure you only buy eggs with a blue tick can help a lot.
